چکیده

Biologists have long been fascinated by the amazing diversity of animal colour patterns. Despite much interest, the underlying evolutionary and developmental mechanisms contributing to their rich variety remain largely unknown, especially the vivid and complex colour patterns seen in vertebrates. Here, we show that complex and camoufl aged animal markings can be formed by the ‘ blending ’ of simple colour patterns. A mathematical model predicts that crossing between animals having inverted spot patterns (for example, ‘ light spots on a dark background ’ and ‘ dark spots on a light background ’ ) will necessarily result in hybrid offspring that have camoufl aged labyrinthine patterns as ‘ blended ’ intermediate phenotypes. We confi rmed the broad applicability of the model prediction by empirical examination of natural and artifi cial hybrids of salmonid fi sh. Our results suggest an unexplored evolutionary process by means of ‘ pattern blending ’ , as one of the possible mechanisms underlying colour pattern diversity and hybrid speciation.

Nanocrystal-based hybrid white light generation with tunable colour parameters

We present the hybridization of CdSe/ZnS core–shell nanocrystals (NCs) on InGaN/GaN based blue/near-UV LEDs to generate light widely tunable across the visible spectral range and especially within the white region of the CIE (1931) chromaticity diagram. We report on the design, growth, fabrication and characterization of these hybrid NC-LEDs. In 26 NC-LED samples, we experimentally show the eff...

Detection of abl/bcr Fusion Gene in Patients Affected by Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia by Dual-Colour Interphase Fluorescence in situ Hybridisation

Conventional cytogenetic is the standard technique for detection of Philadelphia (Ph) chromosome in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Evaluation of abelson murine leukemia/breakpoint cluster region (abl/bcr) fusion using dual-colour fluorescence in situ hybridization (D-FISH) is an alternative approach allowing rapid and reliable detection of the disease. We employed the technique of interphase D...

Application of tri-colour, dual fusion fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) system for the characterization of BCR-ABL1 fusion in chronic myelogenous leukaemia (CML) and residual disease monitoring

BACKGROUND We studied the application of the BCR-ABL1 + 9q34 tri-colour dual fusion fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) system in the characterization of fusion signal pattern and the monitoring of residual disease in chronic myelogenous leukaemia (CML). The signal constellation on metaphases with the tri-colour dual fusion system was defined. The knowledge of various signal patterns obta...

Crypsis through disruptive coloration in an isopod

The white-spotted colour morph of the marine isopod Idotea baltica appears cryptic on the brown alga Fucus vesiculosus with its white-coloured epizoites Electra crustulenta and Balanus improvisus. This study shows that the crypsis of this coloration is achieved through disruptive coloration rather than through background matching. Crypsis through background matching requires that the sizes and ...

"Experiments in Plant Hybridization" (1866), by Johann Gregor Mendel

During the mid-nineteenth century, Johann Gregor Mendel experimented with pea plants to develop a theory of inheritance. In 1843, while a monk in the Augustian St Thomas?s Abbey in Brünn, Austria, now Brno, Czech Repubic, Mendel examined the physical appearance of the abbey?s pea plants ( Pisum sativum [4]) and noted inconsistencies between what he saw and what the blending theory of inheritanc...
